Road traffic accidents are challenges the world is battling in recent times. Majority of increasing road fatalities occurs in developing countries. This study seeks to address part of the issues leading to mechanical failures and road traffic accidents in the developing countries with Ghana as a case study. The study model was validated with the use of a sample collected from 880 mechanics from six regions. The mechanics completed questionnaire measures of perception on used parts, brand new parts, mechanical failure, road accidents and demographic variables. In addition, observation and survey method were also used to collect the data on work quality. The result shows that mechanical failure and road traffic accident correlated positively with used parts and negatively correlated with brand new parts. The study model explained R2 = 0.46 and 0.65 of the variance in mechanical failure and road traffic accident respectively. The independent predictors of mechanical failure were age, gender, experience, perception about used parts and work quality. The predictors of road traffic accident were experience, mechanical failure, perception about brand new parts and work quality. We conclude that the mechanical failure and road traffic accidents could be attributed to non-use of genuine parts, poor work quality standard and poor supervision during and after repairs. Remedial measures addressing these issues could reduce road traffic accident in Ghana.

This research is aimed at finding out challenges of vehicle maintenance system in development nations, and to proffer solutions to vehicle maintenance challenge by finding out the synergy between the vehicle owners and repairers. The research methodology used in this study was done using structured questionnaires, with one hundred and fifty (150) questionnaires sent out across Nigeria, one hundred (100) received and sixty-three (63) being usable. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was carried out to analyze the questionnaire to show validity and reliability of factors considered using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The result from the questionnaire shows that the Maintenance Culture in the Automotive Industry still faces serious challenges ranging from extortion from customers, lack of funds to set up standard automobile workshops, low engagement of the younger masses in the automotive industry, low use of vehicles due to financial issues, high charges from the advanced auto-workshops, circulation of foreign-used vehicles and fairly used parts in the auto-industry. Conclusively, solutions such as scheduled maintenance should be carried out frequently on vehicles, the use of try by error technique should be reduced because most times it creates more problems to the existing ones, service personnel are encouraged to employ the use of diagnosing tool/machines to ease means of identifying problems for accuracy and adequate government policy should be ensured.

Despite the extensive research on Continuous Improvement (CI), limited reflection has been reported regarding the managerial factors needed to successfully deploy Kaizen Events (KEs). This study investigates various managerial aspects that affect the implementation of KEs.After conducting a literature review and gathering experts' inputs, the objectives of the study and six research questions were formulated. A survey questionnaire responded by 175 manufacturing organisations was designed and validated. A combined approach of descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA tests were used to analyse the collected data. Besides other 'soft' aspects, the results determine: (1) the drivers and barriers in the pre-implementation stage of KEs; (2) the critical success factors and challenges related to the implementation stage of KEs; (3) the reasons that result in unsuccessful KEs; and (4) the reasons that stop organisations from running KEs.The study provides insights into an under-researched topic by looking at different phases of KEs implementation. The study contributes to the contingency and the RBV theories by offering an understanding of the importance of different contingencies and resources planning for KEs implementation. The findings are beneficial for industrialists who may aim at driving CIs in their organisations through the implementation of KEs.
