Public space design of knowledge and innovation spaces: learnings from Kelvin Grove Urban Village, Brisbane

Abstract: The era of knowledge-based urban development has led to an unprecedented increase in mobility of people and the subsequent growth in new typologies of agglomerated enclaves of knowledge such as knowledge and innovation spaces. Within this context, a new role has been assigned to contemporary public spaces to attract and retain the mobile knowledge workforce by creating a sense of place. This paper investigates place making in the globalized knowledge economy, which develops a sense of permanence spatio-tempora… Show more

“…In open Innovation economy, diverse and heterogeneous technologies or expectations can lead to new creative combination between technology, and market which is the source of interaction with closed innovation economy . Nowadays, innovative city itself becomes the open innovation platform at which interactions between SMEs or Start-ups, and big businesses are increasing (Inkinen, 2015;Pancholi, Yigitcanlar, & Guaralda, 2015). Large companies of the closed innovation economy can easily and rapidly perform a new combination between technology and market through corporate venture capital (CVC) investment.…”

“…Subjectivity in the choice of indicators is somehow inevitable given the diffuse nature of the concept of sustainability and the lack of more straightforward definitions (Phillis et al 2017). In addition, indicators for smart and sustainable cities are far from any consensus, given the asymmetry of views founded in existing models.…”

“…Sarimin and Yigitcanlar (2012) sees KBUD as a critical approach for achieving sustainability-quadruple bottom line (economy, society, environment, governance)-in our cities. In other words, KBUD is an integrated approach for the transition of cities and their regions into places of attraction, retention and development of intellectual and human capital that will ultimately create a knowledge dynamics applied to the urban context and foster innovation to promote an integral and sustainable development of the territory-not only for the economic terms, but also environmental and societal terms (Pancholi et al 2015;Yigitcanlar et al 2012Yigitcanlar et al , 2017. Baum et al (2009) see KBUD as a critical driver for providing regional outcomes though creative industries.…”

“…In an inter-organisational sense this links to challenge of developing mobile knowledge workers, and how to attract and retain them. The application of urban design principles to creating and sustaining innovation spaces has seen as one to achieve this goal method (see Pancholi et al, 2015).…”
