Public–private mix for tuberculosis care and control: a systematic review

Abstract: PPM is a promising strategy to strengthen global TB care and control, but is affected by contextual characteristics in different areas. The scaling-up of PPM should contain essential commonalities, particularly substantial financial support and continuous material input. Additionally, it is important to improve program governance and training for the health providers involved, through integrated collaborative mechanisms.

“…The CDR is determined by the number of new AFB-positive smears [1], and Indonesia still has a low detection rate for AFB-positive smears, likely due to the low sensitivity of the current microbiological detection tools. CDR is a strategic indicator because the achievement of a 70% CDR, followed by cure rate at 85% or higher, will decrease the annual TB incidence rate by 7–12% [1,6]. Indonesia implemented the PPM in 2003 by recruiting public and private hospitals; the system is known as Hospital DOTS Linkage (HDL).…”

“…According to the findings of this study, healthcare providers working in government institution are more aware of how to transport infectious substances and practice betters when compare with those working in private sector. This was also supported by studies conducted in Africa, China, but in some countries in Asia particularly the private institutions they practice better than governmental institutions [22][23][24][25].…”

“…A strength of this study is the randomised controlled trial design. Despite the abundance of literature describing PPM programmes, robust empirical evidence of their effectiveness on programme outcomes is limited and encompassing mostly cross‐sectional or longitudinal studies, many without controls and apparently none with a randomised design . The intervention was designed from evidence gathered in the field, refined in consultation with stakeholders and was well integrated into the NTP, assuring sustainability.…”
