Public Participatory GIS

Abstract: Public Participatory GIS (PPGIS) is a very broad field, and because of the direct outgrowth addressing questions raised regarding inequitable access to GIS and its societal impacts, PPGIS has become an exhaustive research area. Over the past two decades, several PPGIS initiatives have taken place in the western and non-western world. Several avenues have opened up, but nonetheless, questions regarding the effectiveness of such initiatives remain to be answered. Current research addressing the societal and poli… Show more

“…These fields have experienced significant growth as evidenced in the number of applications and academic publications (Brown and Kyttä ). The growing interest in PPGIS/PGIS/VGI over the last two decades has been accompanied by multiple conferences, workshops, and special journal issues devoted to the subject (Mukherjee ). And yet, the social impact attributable to these spatial mapping methods has not been evident due to multiple social and institutional constraints, including a lack of trust in the origin and quality spatial data generated (Brown ).…”

“…While the increasing availability of high-quality, open source software and open data can reduce financial barriers, affording the hardware on which to run a GIS can continue to be a problem for disadvantaged groups. This increased financial barrier may be why disadvantaged groups tend to be underrepresented in PPGIS/PGIS studies (Brown, 2012) even though PPGIS/PGIS is often aimed to help such groups participate in urban planning (Mukherjee, 2015). Open data and open source software may reduce the financial barrier and may increase PPGIS/ PGIS use but they do not resolve the need for an expert and the time to implement a project (Brown & Kyttä, 2014).…”

“…The Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries www.ejisdc.org National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) in 1996 to describe how GIS technology could support public participation for a variety of applications (Sieber, 2006;Mukherjee, 2015). The term participatory GIS (PGIS) and its practice was the outcome of a spontaneous merger of Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) methods with geographic information technologies (Rambaldi et al, 2006).…”
