Public health and economic impact of switching from a trivalent to a quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine in Mexico

Abstract: Most influenza vaccines in Mexico are trivalent, containing two influenza A strains and a single B strain. Quadrivalent influenza vaccines (QIVs) extend protection by including an additional B strain to cover both co-circulating B lineages. Here, we retrospectively estimated how a switch to QIV in Mexico would have impacted influenza

“…This study has generated results that provide clear information and elements of consideration for switching from one vaccine to another within the immunization program (public health and budget impacts); using a validated approach with a model structure published in the literature. 9 , 10 , 12 Another strength of this model is its adjustments to local characteristics. The model was mainly informed with high-quality local data.…”

“…30 The same approach has already been reported in the literature. 10–12 To these attack rates, we applied probabilities of consultations, hospitalizations and deaths per case from the literature. 23 The alternative rates are presented in Supplementary Table S2.…”

“…Studies from all regions of the world have demonstrated the significant economic benefits of QIV use compared with TIV [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 16 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 , 46 ]. Currently in Argentina, the National Immunization Program recommends annual receipt of TIV for individuals classified as “at risk”.…”

“…Another limitation is that real incidence rates for a non-vaccinated population are simply unobtainable in Argentina, because almost a decade has passed since the start of the influenza vaccination program. This obstacle was overcome by other researchers by the inclusion of the incidence of randomized clinical trials where vaccine efficacy was originally tested in their models [ 10 , 55 , 56 , 57 ]. However, these trials have been conducted in other countries, many of them in the northern hemisphere, where climate issues and population behavior may affect influenza attack rates in a very different way, and hence may not be representative of local epidemiology.…”
