“…Data from several studies using physical features of puberty (obtained from self-report or exams by health professionals) show adrenarche to occur later than gonadarche (Marceau et al, 2011; Paus et al, 2010; Shirtcliff et al, 2009). 1 But adrenal hormones rise earlier than gonadal hormones (reviewed in Styne & Grumbach, 2011), suggesting that physical features alone are insufficient to separate adrenarche from gonadarche, perhaps because adrenal hormone levels are insufficient to produce physical changes until gonadarche (Dorn et al, 2006; Wan, Deng, Archer, & Sun, 2012).…”

“…Progress on understanding mechanisms linking puberty to behavior depends on defining the aspects of puberty that matter and measuring them well, and this is the issue we address in this article. Puberty is not unitary (Styne & Grumbach, 2011), and it is likely that aspects affect psychological development in different ways. For example, psychological risk associated with early pubertal timing mediated by peers would be associated with an aspect of pubertal development apparent to others, whereas risk associated with development of limbic-mediated motivational systems would be associated with an early developing aspect.…”

“…Pubertal development is associated with prominent changes in the body composition with attainment of more body fat in girls and more lean body mass, skeletal mass, and muscle mass in boys. 57 Moreover, these changes in body composition occur several years earlier in girls than in boys. 57 Without controlling for these developmental changes, the association between sleep duration and obesity may be biased.…”

“…57 Moreover, these changes in body composition occur several years earlier in girls than in boys. 57 Without controlling for these developmental changes, the association between sleep duration and obesity may be biased. Whether this relationship varies as a function of age and gender or is related to the pubertal growth needs further exploration.…”

“…There is a time lag between testosterone surge and physical development that occurs at puberty. An individual can have a surge in testosterone and yet the physical signs associated with this shift might not yet be present, especially in boys [Styne, 2007]. If we had sampled older adolescents (14-18 year olds), a correlation between pubertal status and testosterone levels would probably have been found, particularly among boys.…”
