Pubertal timing, sexual behaviour and self‐reported depression in middle adolescence

Abstract: The associations between pubertal timing, sexual activity and self‐reported depression were analysed in a population sample of 17,082 girls and 15,922 boys aged 14–16 as a par of a classroom survey. Pubertal timing was assessed by age at onset of menstruation (menarche) or ejaculations (oigarche). Sexual experiences elicited included kissing, light petting, heavy petting and intercourse. Self‐reported depression was measured by the 13‐item Beck Depression Inventory. Among girls, self‐reported depression was as… Show more

“…The studies of Kaltiala-Heino et al [57][58][59] are particularly key because of the large sample size and the use of a graded scale of age at puberty in the statistical analysis; however, the results may reflect characteristics of contemporary Finnish society that do not generalize in detail to all populations. Studies using a similar framework (internalizing and externalizing symptoms) are rare in clinical precocious puberty samples, but 1 study 60 supported a similar conclusion.…”

“…We have previously cited the examples of substance use (Mezzich et al, 1997), eating pathology (Cauffman & Steinberg, 1996;Smolak et al, 1993), and academic achievement (Stattin & Magnusson, 1990). Kaltiala-Heino, Kosunen, & Rimpela (2003) have noted an association between early menarche, early sexual activity, and depression during adolescence. They suggest that depressive affect might result from sexual activity occurring before adolescents were prepared.…”

“…During adolescence, pubertal timing and the onset of pubertal neuroendocrine events are associated with the relative risk for psychopathology in girls and boys (Graber et al, 1997, 2004, Ge et al, 2001, Kaltiala-Heino et al, 2003a, 2003b. For example, degree of pubertal development in early adolescent girls predicts disordered eating one year later (Keel et al, 1997).…”
