Pubertal growth in height, sitting height and leg length in achondroplasia

Abstract: Background: Children with achondroplasia (ACH) appear to lack a pubertal growth spurt in height. Aim To explore the growth spurt in height and its segments sitting height and leg length, in a large sample of ACH cases using growth curve modelling. Subjects and methods: Height and sitting height were measured longitudinally in ACH children, and the data were analysed using the SITAR (SuperImposition by Translation and Rotation) growth model, which estimates a mean growth curve and random effects for individuals… Show more

“…The height is approximately 5.00 SD below the median compared non-achondroplastic populations with a mean adult height of approximately -6 SD [8,10,11,91].Thus, the curves are similar in shape but lesser in magnitude in comparison to the general population in both periods [34,90]. Besides, 72% of that small growth peak is caused by the peak of trunk length [90,92,93].…”

“…The assessment of their respective levels and proportional relationships throughout the growth process aids in the identification of conditions associated with abnormal height growth-related diseases. [3,4] This study involved the analysis of data obtained from the physical growth census of elementary school students aged 6 to 12 years in Tianyuan District, Zhuzhou City. The collected data were then compared with national standards to elucidate the patterns of changes in height and body proportions among children within the specified age range in the district.…”

“…With regards to achondroplasia, del and Cole et al (2021) mentioned that these children experience an "adolescent growth spurt." It is similar in shape and has half the magnitude of the general population, so it would be expected that HCH children could also have a peak of pubertal growth.…”
