Pterocarpans from Bituminaria morisiana and Bituminaria bituminosa.

Abstract: Pterocarpans from Bituminaria morisiana and Bituminaria bituminosa. -Bitucarpin A (Ia) and B (Ib) are isolated from the aerial parts of the papilionaceous plants Bituminaria morisiana and Bituminaria bituminosa along with known phenolics and a known isoflavonoid. The accumulation of pterocarpans at the expense of biogenetically more primitive shikimate metabolites like furanocoumarins or isoflavonoids supports the inclusion of this plant, once part of the genus Psoralea, into the distinct genus Bituminaria. -(… Show more

“…Taken together, these data show that the extracts from P. morisiana show remarkable antioxidant activity. This plant is a rich source of pterocarpans, a relatively rare type of flavonoids with agricultural potential as pest control agents [4]. Erybraedin C plays a critical role in the antioxidant activity of P. morisiana and, on account of its powerful activity, high concentration (,1% of the aerial parts) and straightforward isolation, qualifies as a new and interesting antioxidant, warranting further investigations in vivo.…”

“…Erybraedin C, plicatin B, and bitucarpin A were quantified in the petroleum ether, EtOAc, and MeOH extracts (1 mg/ mL in MeOH solution) by reversed-phase HPLC as previously described for linoleic acid. Identification was carried out comparing their retention times with those of reference pure compounds [4].…”
