Psyllium Mucilage and Its Use in Pharmaceutical Field: An Overview

Abstract: Plantago psyllium mucilage or Plantago psyllium ovate is a food grade natural polysaccharide obtained from Plantago psyllium and its mucilage is calm of natural arabinoxylan (arabinose 22.6% and xylose 74.6%). Psyllium mucilage is extracted from psyllium husk. Graft copolymerization is one of the best methods for modifying psyllium, which impart certain functional properties to psyllium without destroying its basic properties. The grafting is initiated through the formation of the free radical centers on the p… Show more

“…Further, Psyllium is considered as adequate source of soluble and insoluble dietary fibers, and the concentration of these fibers is eight-folds higher than oats bran (A. Verma & Mogra, 2013) [38] . Dietary fibers obtain formed psyllium can be utilized as functional ingredients which exhibits numerous heath attributes including; heart disease diseases, weight loss, obesity, hypercholesterolemia (Kumar et al, 2017) [39] . Flax seed (Linum usitatissimum) Flax seed belongs to Lineaceae family, which have numerous health and industrial applications (Goyal et al, 2014) [40] .…”

“…Compound [A1 & A2] showed weak and moderate activity against the bacterial species used. Compounds [A3,A4 & A5] gave strong efficacy and high inhibition, reaching (5) cm at a concentration of (100) mg/ml and reached (4) cm at Concentration (50) mg/ml against all bacterial species used in the study [19][20][21][22][23]. Table (5), and scheme (2-5) demonstrate the effects of the inhibition zone diameter (IZD) in millimeters.…”

“…In psyllium, arabinoxylan partly side stubs, including D-glucoronic-or D-galacturonic residues in the terminal position, are found. This highly branched characteristic as well as the anionic charged residues are responsible for an excellent solubility and a highly viscous behaviour in solution [61,62]. Despite the high viscosity, a regular treatment of psyllium mucous polysaccharide in hypercholesterolemic men causes a reduction of cholesterol and LDL level in serum of about 20%.…”
