Psychotropic Medication Use in French Children and Adolescents

Abstract: The prevalence of psychotropic drug use in France is similar to that of the Netherlands and much lower than what is observed in the United States. Stimulants are less frequently prescribed in France than in other European countries, but anxiolytics are prescribed considerably more in France than in any other country.

“…As reported in various previous studies the prevalence rates in the last years for psychotropic consumption in children and adolescents shows a trend to increase [2][3][4][5][6]12], but not in Catalonia were we find a decrease in their consumption. In Catalonia the prevalence of psychotropic use is lower than in the Nordic countries which is also shown in other South European countries as Italy and France [3,6]. In a French study analysing the patterns of consumption in children of 6-17 years there was an increase of 3.9% in antidepressants from 2009-2016 meanwhile in our study from 2009-2016 their consumption decreases in Catalonia (-7.7%) [13].…”

“…Consumption of psychotropic medication has been studied in the paediatric population (children and adolescents, < 18) in Europe [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Although, there is a large variation in the consumption of psychotropic medication at an international level in the paediatric population, this may be related to, and influenced by, multiple factors such as the cultural approach of each country towards mental diseases, the clinical practice or the health systems and health policy [8,9].…”

“…The use of stimulants to treat ADHD has increased markedly over the past two decades throughout the entire Western world . Nevertheless, stimulant use varies markedly between countries and regions of the world, with some countries such as France and Italy reporting as little as 0.2% and 0.02% of their paediatric population receiving pharmacological treatment . Some of the differences may be due to limited access to ADHD drugs or differences in preferring behavioural therapy with and without concomitant pharmacological treatment in some countries.…”

“…Par contre, la prévalence serait la plus élevée en France pour les hypnotiques et anxiolytiques (2 % vs moins de 1 % pour les autres pays) [17]. Cette tendance est corroborée par d'autres auteurs qui s'intéressent également au sujet en France [18,19] comme à l'étranger [20,21].…”
