Psychotherapy Style Scale: Development and Validation

Abstract: Psychotherapy style is conceptualized as the therapeutic method that a therapist employs while working with clients during treatment. It influences both the therapeutic process and results of therapeutic actions. The present study developed and validated the Psychotherapy Style Scale (PSS). By following a systematic psychometric development process, a three-factor structure of the PSS was identified. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence of multidimensional structure an… Show more

“…When conducting exploratory factor analysis, it is necessary to test whether there is correlation or partial correlation among variables in order to judge the feasibility of exploratory factor analysis [ 47 ]. SPSS 20 was used to conduct a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test and Bartlett's test of sphericity to consider the appropriateness of factor analysis, with the criteria to be > 0.50 and < 0.01, respectively [ 48 ]. Furthermore, Principal component analysis (PCA) is an adaptive exploratory approach for data processing, compression, and extraction [ 49 ].…”

“…Sampling adequacy for EFA was assessed by the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) test and the value of p , with the criteria to be >0.50 and <0.01, respectively ( Zhou et al, 2021 ). Equally, items with factor loading < 0.5 and loaded on the factors other than its design will be dropped out of scale.…”

“…PST is a theoretical concept that was initially developed in Latin America; it has had a sizable volume of publications (Casari et al, 2018) and has been supported by psychometric studies on therapists of different nationalities (Moura de Carvalho et al, 2011; Prado‐Abril et al, 2020; Silva Palma & Gondim, 2016). It has been recognized as a useful model to understand therapist's working style (Heinonen, 2015; Rihacek & Roubal, 2017; Zhou et al, 2021). Originally postulated as a transtheoretical variable, the PST has shown differences between professionals of different theoretical orientations (Quiñones et al, 2022) and is connected to the personality of the therapists (Casari et al, 2019).…”
