Psychosocial predictors of quality of life among South Africa adolescents receiving antiretroviral therapy

Abstract: Minimal research has been conducted to understand the relationship between psychosocial factors, fatigue, and quality of life among adolescents living with HIV. We studied 134 South African adolescents receiving an antiretroviral therapy (ART) at community clinics to examine the relationship between fatigue, sleep disturbance, depression, anxiety, pain and quality of life. “…AGYW living with (or affected by) HIV were found to be affected by poverty, stigma, and discrimination [33,38,43,44,46,48,49,52,55,59,73,85]. “…This review found that AGYW continue to experience enacted stigma and felt discrimination within their social context [38,43,44,48,49,53,55,59]. Enacted stigma is external stigma from the public based on the condition society perceives to be imperfect [90].…”

“…Evidence suggests that higher levels of sleep disturbances in PLWH are closely related to lower CD4 + T cell count and higher HIV viral load ( 13 , 14 ). In addition, sleep disturbances may further contribute to fatigue ( 15 ), depression ( 16 ), impaired cognitive function ( 17 ), increased risk of cardiovascular disease ( 18 ), and reduced quality of life in PLWH ( 19 ). Given the high prevalence and negative impact of sleep disturbances in PLWH, it is necessary to develop appropriate intervention strategies to address the various biological, environmental, and psychological factors that may affect sleep in PLWH.…”

“…In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) there are an estimated 2.8 million YPLHIV aged 15-24 years [4]. Many YPLHIV in SSA are at high risk for HIV-related mortality, morbidity [5] and poor quality of life due to the sub-optimal access to treatment and psycho-social services, including exposure to multiple stigmas [6][7][8][9]. According to the United Nations [10], the number of YPLHIV in Africa is projected to increase by 44% between 2015 and 2030.…”
