Psychosocial life achievements in adults even if they received prophylactic cranial irradiation for acute lymphoblastic leukemia during childhood

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess life goal achievements in long-term survivors (LTS) receiving cranial radiotherapy (CRT) as central nervous system (CNS) prophylaxis for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) during childhood, compared to healthy individuals. Participants in this study were 141 LTS treated in our center from 1961 to 1990. Questionnaires were mailed to LTS. Analyses were stratified by age classes comparing LTS and a matched healthy population living in the same geographic area, as well as compar… Show more

“…Among the studies exploring the occupational outcome only of childhood AL survivors, the findings are also heterogeneous. Some studies have reported similar employment rates between survivors and controls [31][32][33], whereas others have reported a lower proportion of employed survivors [4,14], but the inclusion criteria are often restrictive depending on the history of the AL. Several factors could contribute to the favorable employment rate of the survivors in our study.…”

“…are clearly differentiated. Many previous studies that have explored the employment status of childhood cancer survivors have reported their results concerning unemployed survivors without differentiating, for example, students or those not working by choice [6,17,20,22,23,31,32]. In our study, active childhood AL survivors (currently on the labor market) were compared to the active general French population to explore the potential difficulties in accessing employment for the survivors who were likely to work.…”

“…Studies have demonstrated a variety of educational attainment across survivors of childhood cancer. Results include the following: (1) similar outcomes for both survivors and controls10–16; (2) findings showing significantly poorer educational outcomes for survivors17–20 and (3) findings demonstrating significantly better educational attainment, particularly at university level, for survivors 21 22…”
