“…Also, there was a positive relationship between maladaptive coping and alcohol relapse in this study ( r s = 0.217, p < 0.05). The findings of coping strategies are seen as parallel with previous studies that found individuals who had abstained from alcohol tended to use a greater number of effective coping strategies than those who had relapsed [26, 44].…”

“…NARRATIVE THEORY IV: WITHIN-SUBJECT EFFECTS real-world stressful events, including job loss or financial stress and hurricanes, has been linked to increased use of alcohol or relapse (Sinha, 2012;Sureshkumar et al, 2017). Additionally, a recent decline in life expectancy in the United States has been linked to "deaths of despair" due to substance use and economic hardship (Case & Deaton, 2017).…”

“…The ability to shift delay discounting within-subject during a single session via active versus control narratives could help inform future experimental designs, but perhaps more importantly suggests scarcity narratives exert state-dependent effects on discounting that dissipates when challenged by an opposing narrative. Exposure to real-world stressful events, including job loss or financial stress and hurricanes, has been linked to increased use of alcohol or relapse (Sinha, 2012; Sureshkumar et al, 2017). Additionally, a recent decline in life expectancy in the United States has been linked to “deaths of despair” due to substance use and economic hardship (Case & Deaton, 2017).…”
