“…As a result, since engagement or flow can contribute to psychological well-being (see also Carli et al, 1988;Croom, 2012bCroom, , 2014Csikszentmihalyi, 1975Csikszentmihalyi, , 1990Csikszentmihalyi, , 2000De Manzano et al, 2010;Dietrich, 2004;Engeser, 2012;Ericsson et al, 1993;Hymer, 1984;Nakamura, 1988;Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi, 2002Rich, 2013;Seligman, 2010Seligman, , 2011Shernoff & Csikszentmihalyi, 2009;Strati et al, 2011;Wells, 1988), and since several studies have indeed suggested that music practice and participation can contribute to engagement or flow experience (see also Bakker, 2005;De Manzano et al, 2010;Dietrich, 2004;Hatfield, Cacioppo, & Rapson, 1994;Hymer, 1984;Pates et al, 2003;Peifer, 2012;Rogatko, 2009;Schuler, 2012), there are good grounds for asserting that music practice and participation can positively contribute to psychological well-being.…”

“…Flow has been described as a rise of concentration and attention, and enhanced sense of control without keeping track of time (Csikszentmihalyi 1975(Csikszentmihalyi , 1991. Only recently have the first studies investigating the physiology of flow been published (de Manzano et al 2010;Keller et al 2011; for an overview see ;Peifer 2012;Peifer et al 2014Peifer et al , 2015, and they suggest flow experience to be associated with moderate activation of the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. Further, studies have shown the involvement of parasympathetic activation (i.e., vagal tone) in modulating flow (Peifer et al 2014;Tozman et al 2015), thus pointing to a crucial role of the vagus nerve.…”

“…Although there is a lot of research on psychological correlates, studies on biological and neuropsychological correlates of flow have been rare (for a review, see Peifer, 2012). Flow has been found to correlate with cardiovascular, respiratory and EMG measures (de Manzano, Theorell, Harmat, & Ullen, 2010;Gaggioli, Cipresso, Serino, & Riva, 2013), suggesting relative sympathetic enhancement during flow.…”
