Psychophysiological Assessment in Pilots Performing Challenging Simulated and Real Flight Maneuvers

Abstract: The psychophysiological arousal value assessment was tested in field measurements, yielding quantifiable arousal differences between proficiency groups of pilots during simulated and real flight conditions. The method used in this study allows an evaluation of the psychophysiological cost during a certain flying performance and thus is possibly a valuable tool for objectively evaluating the actual skill status of pilots.Johannes B, Rothe S, Gens A, Westphal S, Birkenfeld K, Mulder E, Rittweger J, Ledderhos C. … Show more

“…Future research with larger samples must help understand the psychophysiological stress response in these demanding contexts. In this approach, analyzing the influence of different behavioral factors such as psychological, physical activity, nutrition, and psychological profiles [ 70 , 71 ] may help to obtain a better comprehension of the stress response allowing for multidisciplinary interventions in this kind of population, in particular and in general populations exposed to large stress environments. Having more objective data on the pilot’s psychophysiological workload during flying tasks would be beneficial for the selection process concerning the different types of aircraft and to pilots, as well as for the missions assigned, and it could also be used as one more predictor of their performance [ 53 , 54 ].…”

“…The presented results of scientific research on determining the strategic directions of introduction in the state aviation of Ukraine system of measures of psychophysiological support of professional activity of military pilots are considered for the first time. Of course, given the existence of a strong social and economic effect of the introduction of psychophysiological technologies [4,6,8,9,21,29], in modern literature there are examples of scientific justification and introduction of certain elements of psychophysiological support of professional activities, including military pilots. However, some of them are aimed at the implementation of psychophysiological selection measures and related psychophysiological examination [4,9,10,29,30].…”
