“…Competence in the nursing field involves the cognitive, social, and psychomotor skills needed by nurses to safely perform their work (Jaensson, Falk‐Brynhildsen, Gillespie, Wallentin, & Nilsson, ). “…Various tools have been developed to evaluate the competencies of nurses (Clinton, Murrells, & Robinson, ; Cowan, Wilson‐Barnett, Norman, & Murrells, ; Gillespie, Polit, et al, ; Meretoja et al, ; Nilsson et al, ; Takase & Teraoka, ) (Table ). In one study, it was stated that the evaluation of competence via self‐evaluations, which are widely accepted and time effective, helps to identify the areas that are in need of development, and at the same time allows nurses to evaluate their practices (Jaensson et al, ). Competence scales are used to evaluate the general competencies of nurses (e.g.…”

“…For instance, the Perceived Perioperative Competence Scale-Revised (PPCS-R) is a useful instrument to assess and compare anaesthesia nurses' perioperative nursing competence with that of scrub nurses' and circulating nurses' . 17,18,24 However, the PPCS-R does not fully address specialized competence areas required for sedated/anaesthetized patient care where patients are not able to make their own decision and are highly dependent on technology and medication during the anaesthesia care process. 26 Thus, using a generic instrument engenders difficulties grasping such special areas of anaesthesia nursing care.…”
