The effects of Turkish adolescents' self-efficacy and health literacy on their health behaviors are examined in this study. Design and method: This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional design with a sample population of 440 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. The data were collected using a demographic data form and analyzed according to the Self-Efficacy Scale for Children, the Health Literacy Scale, and the Adolescent Lifestyle Profile. Results: The regression analysis found that the self-efficacy and health literacy levels of adolescents predicted their healthy lifestyle behaviors (F = 141.813, p = 0.000). The self-efficacy and health literacy levels explained 41.9% of the healthy lifestyle behaviors of the subjects, with regression coefficients for self-efficacy and health literacy of 0.545 and 0.185, respectively. Self-efficacy among adolescents significantly predicted all the subdimensions of healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, positive life view, interpersonal relations, stress management, and spiritual health. Similarly, the health literacy levels predicted all the sub-dimensions except for physical activity and stress management. Conclusions: In this study, the adolescents' self-efficacy levels and their health literacy levels significantly explained their health behaviors. This finding suggests that increasing the self-efficacy and health literacy levels of adolescents should be increased to develop positive health behaviors among today's youth. Practice implications: Nurses should identify strategies to increase self-efficacy and health literacy among adolescents to protect and improve adolescent health behavior.

Background: Research related to health literacy among children is limited due to the lack of appropriate measurement tools for this population. The measurement tools used to measure health literacy among children are usually adapted from the adult versions. Researches related to instruments measuring health literacy that can be used for children in school environments are inadequate. This study aimed to synthesize research on the instruments that measure health literacy among children in the community setting.Method: We carried out a scoping review to synthesize research on the instruments measuring health literacy among children in the community setting. The article searching process was targeted to collect articles with corresponding populations, concepts, and contexts. The search was conducted through PubMed, ProQuest, ScienceDirect, and Sage Journals databases published between 2010-2020. The selection process was done using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses methods (PRISMA). The following critical appraisal used The Joanna Briggs Institute checklist.Results: Out of 328 studies, six articles were selected for this review. Consensus showed that health literacy needs to be applied in various situations. Improving the health literacy of children in the early stages is crucial for children's development and personal health. Several instruments can be applied to measure health literacy in school-age children, such as Health Literacy Measures for Adolescents, Health Literacy for School-aged Children in the English, Turkish and Lithuanian versions, and Chinese version of the eight-item Health Literacy Assessment Tool. Generally, the instruments are adequate, while only two instruments in this study are inadequate because they do not describe the validity and reliability.

Background and AimsHealth literacy (HL) is an essential determinant of health in children. Inadequate HL causes problems for individuals and society, such as more hospitalizations, medication errors, poor health, and higher mortality and health care costs. A valid and reliable scale is needed to measure this population's HL. This study evaluated the cross‐cultural adaptation and validation of the Persian version of the HL for School‐Aged Children (HLSAC) Scale.MethodsIn this methodological research, the HL scale of school‐aged children was translated from English to Persian using the Backward–Forward translation protocol. The content validity, face validity, construct validity (Exploratory Factor Analysis [EFA] and Confirmatory factor analysis [CFA]), plus reliability, were evaluated by Internal consistency and stability methods. Two hundred forty samples from south of Tehran were selected by multi‐stage sampling method to assess the construct validity. Data analysis was performed using SPSS v24 and Jamovi v2.2.ResultsA qualitative evaluation of face and content validity showed that experts and the target group approved all items on the scale. The results of EFA indicated the existence of one factor, explaining 47.17% of the total variance of the scale. The CFA results showed that the one‐factor model of the Persian version of the HL scale for children is almost acceptable. (χ2/df = 2.94, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.09, Normed‐Fit Index = 0.89, Tucker‐Lewis Index = 0.89, Comparative Fit Index = 0.92). Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the whole scale was 0.80, and the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient value for the whole scale was calculated as 0.78 using the single‐rating, absolute‐agreement, 2‐way mixed‐effects method.ConclusionThe study validates the HLSAC Scale, affirming its suitability for assessing HL in Persian‐speaking child populations.
