Psychometric Testing of the Spanish Version of the Pain Level Outcome Scale in Hospitalized Patients With Acute Pain

Abstract: The version with 17 indicators shows good psychometric properties and adequate sensitivity to change. A Spanish version of the Pain Level Outcome Scale with 17 indicators is proposed as a structured multidimensional instrument to help nurses choose the most appropriate indicators for assessing patients' pain.

“…In terms of reliability, the scale yielded high internal consistency ( α = 0.86), which means it has a high reliability, as has the Braden scale ( α = 0.78) (Fulbrook & Anderson, ; García‐Díaz et al., ). INTEGRARE matches the scores obtained by other NOC‐based tools, such as INICIARE ( α = 0.98) (Barrientos‐Trigo, ; Porcel‐Gálvez, ), CoNOCidiet ( α = 0.87) (Martín‐García et al., ), GIPS‐3 ( α = 0.81) (Morilla‐Herrera et al., ), and the Pain Level Outcome Scale ( α = 0.93) (Bellido‐Vallejo et al., ). These data restate the suitability of Standardized Nursing Languages (SNL) as a basis for the development of instruments for assessing and quantifying health outcomes.…”

“…Acute postoperative (PO) pain control is one of the most important factors for obtaining quality results in hospitalization. Although understanding of the pathophysiology of pain has evolved and pharmacological and technological advances have been made, pain continues to be a symptom constantly experienced by hospitalized patients (Bellido‐Vallejo, Rodríguez‐Torres, López‐Medina, & Pancorbo‐Hidalgo, ). Therefore, assessing pain is of great relevance to all healthcare professionals, because it is difficult to resolve an issue for which there is no measure to base treatment or therapeutic behavior upon (da Silva & Ribeiro‐Filho, ).…”

“…Since the KPM indicators are the specific elements that measure particular aspects of knowledge, their adaptation is especially relevant so that patients are able to understand what information is being requested from them and so that they can convey precise answers, and professionals are able to distinguish between ignorance and knowledge in the different dimensions that make up the KPM outcome. On the basis of the data from this study and other similar studies [43,44], this translation and cultural adaptation process results in a clearer and more comprehensible wording of the outcome definition and its indicators than that obtained by directly translating it from English into Spanish without expert assessment.…”
