Psychometric properties of the postpartum depression screening scale beyond the postpartum period

Abstract: Accurate postpartum depression screening measures are needed to identify mothers with depressive symptoms both in the postpartum period and beyond. Because it had not been tested beyond the immediate postpartum period, the reliability and validity of the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS) and its sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value for diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD) were assessed in a diverse community sample of 238 mothers of 4- to 15-month-old infants. Mothers (N = 238; M a… Show more

“…Maternal risk for postpartum depression was assessed using the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS) [ 23 ]. The PDSS is a 35-item Likert-type self-report instrument that demonstrates strong sensitivity and specificity for postpartum depression in the 15 months after childbirth [ 24 ]. It has adequate psychometrics for mothers of infants in NICUs [ 25 ].…”

“…Evaluation of individual domain specific PROMs has been previously published for example mental health 28 , postpartum recovery 55 and incontinence 40 but no work exists examining multi domain PROM or a combination of PROMs suitable to universally examine postpartum health and wellbeing. We have also expanded on the domains put forward by ICHOM work.…”

“…A number of instruments are available for screening for maternal depression, and these include the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ) [ 95 , 96 ], the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale [ 97 , 98 ], the Postpartum Depression Screening Scale (PDSS) [ 99 , 100 ] and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), which is probably the most commonly used because of its substantial sensitivity and specificity as a screening tool for maternal depression. It also has a high positive predictive value, which is the probability that women who are identified with high depressive symptoms are truly depressive on clinical assessments.…”
