Psychometric properties of the Persian version of abridged Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 (CD-RISC-10) among older adults

Abstract: Background Resilience is an ability of an individual to respond positively to environmental challenges. This ability could help elderly people to better cope with their age-related changes and diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of Persian version of abridged Connor- Davidson scale of resilience among Iranian elderly people with chronic diseases. Methods Standard translation/back-translation procedure was appl… Show more

“…These ndings are in line with the original study [29], as well as other validation studies that examined the psychometric quality and usefulness of the CD-RISC-10 in different sub-samples, i.e. Chinese adolescent students [36]; Canadian [30], Spanish [31], Nigerian [32], and US [37] university students; Finnish [33], Spanish, Chinese [40], and Persian older adults [35]. Similarly, the Arabic 10-item and the 8-item PTGI-SF yielded single-factor structure and showed adequate internal consistency, supporting their unidimensionality and excellent psychometric properties as observed in the original validation studies [43,44], and other adaptations of the scales in various contexts and cultural backgrounds (e.g., [44,[47][48][49][50][51][52][53]).…”

“…This motivated many researchers to develop shorter and more psychometrically sound versions (10 and 2 items) [28], from which the most stable and most reliable at capturing the resilience construct is the 10-item version (CD-RISC-10) [29]. The CD-RISC-10 has been translated into different languages, including French [30], Spanish [31,32], Finnish [33], South African [34], Persian [35], and Chinese [36]; it has also been tested in different speci c populations, i.e., students [34,36,37], community young adults [31,32,38], older adults [33,39,40], and adults on the autism spectrum [41]. However, an Arabic shortened version of the CD-RISC has not been developed so far to the best of our knowledge.…”

“…One example of its items is: “ I can deal with whatever comes my way.” Higher scores indicate higher levels of resilience. Reliability coefficients for the CD-RISC-10 have generally exceeded .80 (e.g., Campbell-Sills & Stein, 2007: α = .85; Cheng et al, 2020: α = .90; Rezaeipandari et al, 2022: α = .89). The CD-RISC-10 has been used with teachers in South Africa (Padmanabhanunni, Pretorius, Bouchard et al, 2022), and alpha and omega coefficients of .95 were reported in that study.…”

“…An example item includes: “I am able to adapt to change.” Higher scores on these items represent higher levels of individual resilience and safe performance. The validity and reliability of the Persian version of the questionnaire were investigated in a previous study with older adults (content validity ratio = 0.85, content validity index =0.90) [61] . The Cronbach's alpha for the sample in the current study was 0.78.…”
