[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the item difficulty degree between the Pediatric Balance Scale and Fullerton Advanced Balance scale for children with cerebral palsy. [Subjects and Methods] Forty children with cerebral palsy (male=17, female=23) voluntarily participated in the study. Item difficulty was expressed in the Rasch analysis using a logit value, with a higher value indicative of increasing item difficulty. [Results] Among the 24 items of the combined Pediatric Balance Scale and Fullerton Advanced Balance scale, the most difficult item was “Walk with head turns”, whereas, the easiest item was “Sitting with back unsupported and feet supported on the floor”. Among the 14 items of the Pediatric Balance Scale, 9 items (item 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, and 12) had negative logit values, whereas for the Fullerton Advanced Balance scale, only 1 item (item 1) had a negative logit value. [Conclusion] The Fullerton Advanced Balance scale is a more appropriate tool to assess balance ability than the Pediatric Balance Scale in in a group of higher functioning children with cerebral palsy.

Purpose: to characterize the performance of children with autism spectrum disorders in two postural balance assessment scales. Methods: an observational cross-sectional study with a descriptive, analytical profile. Seven to 11-year-old children with mild autism spectrum disorder, diagnosed by an interdisciplinary team, according to the DSM-5, were assessed. The protocols used were the Sensory Organization Test and Pediatric Balance Scale. Results: all the children obtained maximum performance in the Sensory Organization Test. As for the Pediatric Balance Scale, the participants had similar responses in 8 out of its 14 items; in the other 6, there was a standard deviation. Conclusion: the participants did not have difficulties performing the Pediatric Balance Scale and Sensory Organization Test, scoring quite close to the maximum value.

Introducción La fisioterapia como área de estudio del movimiento corporal humano, se ha enfatizado en ofrecer herramientas de recuperación a pacientes con diversos tipos de patología a nivel osteomuscular, cardiovascular y neuromuscular. Los procesos de evaluación en fisioterapia son importantes para la identificación de alteraciones estructurales y funcionales en el movimiento corporal humano, en la actualidad existen diversos instrumentos de evaluación con altos niveles de confiabilidad que permiten identificar alteraciones funcionales en los pacientes. Objetivo realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre pruebas clínicas utilizadas para la evaluación del movimiento corporal humano en población adulta y pediátrica en la práctica clínica categorizada por las categorías de la APTA. Método revisión sistemática de la literatura donde se tuvieron en cuenta estudios contemplados del año 2000 al 2016, literatura que contemplara los siguientes términos DeCS: Evaluation, Physical Therapy, pediatrics, adult. Resultados se pudo identificar que entre población adulta y pediátrica existen diferencias en las escalas de medición utilizadas para la evaluación del movimiento corporal humano, las escalas pueden ser categorizadas a través de las categorías de la APTA como características antropométricas, capacidad aeróbica y resistencia, integridad integumentaria, dolor, conciencia atención y cognición, integridad refleja, función motora, desarrollo neuromotor e integridad sensorial, rango de movimiento y flexibilidad, desempeño muscular, marcha y locomoción, balance, autocuidado y manejo en el hogar. Conclusión se pudieron identificar pruebas clínicas con altos niveles de validez y confiabilidad que permiten determinar alteraciones del movimiento corporal humano en adultos y niños, estas pruebas pueden ser categorizadas a través de las categorías de la APTA.

Abstract: The PBS items are best targeted to preschool-age children; additional children with known balance dysfunction are required to fully assess functioning of the easiest PBS items. Revisions may improve PBS utility in older children.
