Psychometric properties of the national eye institute refractive error correction quality-of-life questionnaire among Iranian patients

Abstract: Background and Aim:To evaluate the psychometric properties of the national Eye Institute refractive error correction quality of life questionnaire (NEI-RQL-42) among Iranian patients with refractive errors.Materials and Methods:Two samples of patients (n1 = 296, n2 = 95) were consecutively selected from the eye clinic of the Boo-Ali Hospital, Qazvin. A forward-backward procedure was conducted to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Iranian version of the NEI-RQL-42. A homogeneity, stability, and reliabilit… Show more

“…Construct validity has also been shown to be good (Nichols et al 2003). Although questions have been raised about its psychometric properties (McAlinden et al 2011), this tool has been validated in several translations (Labiris et al 2012;Pakpour et al 2013) and continues to be widely used in assessing the impact of refractive care on quality of life (Jones et al 1996;Cillino et al 2014;Nehls et al 2014). Although this instrument has not been widely utilized in paediatric populations, the authors felt that it was important to employ an instrument specific to refractive error and its correction, and no such instruments currently exist that are specific to children.…”

“…The strong correlation between the scores of our questionnaire and the Persian version of the NEI-VFQ showed high criterion validity of the questionnaire. The selection of the NEI-VFQ as ''criterion'' was due to availability of its Persian version (previously validated) 14,15 and comparing it in different studies with the AS-20. 4,7 These results demonstrated that this questionnaire was a reliable and valid tool to assess HRQOL in Iranian strabismus cases.…”

“…To evaluate construct validity by the known group method, 30 patients with strabismus (prior to surgery) and 30 patients without any ocular disease, facial abnormality, or other cosmetic problems completed the final questionnaire and the difference between two scores were evaluated. Also, to evaluate the criterion (concurrent) validity, 30 patients with strabismus completed both the final questionnaire and the previously validated Persian version of the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) 14,15 and the correlation between the scores of these questionnaires was assessed. The NEI-VFQ-25 is a 25-item questionnaire that evaluates eye-related HRQOL and involves questions about problems such as ocular pain, distance and near visual activities, driving, color vision, peripheral vision, and vision-specific role difficulties and dependencies.…”
