Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Resilience Scale (RS-14): Preliminary results

Abstract: Background In recent years, resilience has received extensive attention in psychology. The 14-Item Resilience Scale (RS-14) has been developed as a newer and shorter version of the resilience scale and has been applied in Western countries. “…Psychometric analyses have been conducted on the Brazilian ( Damásio et al, 2011 ), Finnish ( Losoi et al, 2013 ), Polish ( Surzykiewicz et al, 2019 ), Greek ( Ntountoulaki et al, 2017 ), and Japanese ( Nishi et al, 2010 ) versions of the RS14, but the only alternative language version captured in our scoping review was the Chinese version. Analyses of the psychometric properties of this version of the scale revealed similarly strong evidence of internal structure, relations to other variables, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability ( Chen et al, 2020 ; Chung et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The participants with RS-14 scoring ≤63, between 64–73, and ≥74 were regarded as lowly, moderately, and highly resilient, respectively as demonstrated in previous reports ( Gao et al., 2019 ). RS-14 showed satisfactory reliability and validity in the Chinese cultural context ( Chen et al., 2020 ; Gao et al., 2019 ; Tian and Hong, 2013 ). In this survey, Cronbach's α coefficient of internal consistency of this scale was 0.941.…”

“…Culture is a vital factor in a person's values and way of life, which subsequently will dictate the way individuals assess life and satisfaction (Oishi, 2018). Based on previous literature, culture has been found to be able to influence factors such as gratitude, resilience, and well-being directly and indirectly (Chen et al, 2020;Kumar & Dixit, 2014;Noor et al, 2018).…”
