Psychometric Properties of the Brief COPE Among Pregnant African American Women

Abstract: This paper describes the assessment of the psychometric properties of the Brief COPE in a sample of 189 pregnant African-American women. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) tested the original 14-factor model, and exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) determined whether a reduced number of factors still accounted for inter-item covariances. The CFA replicated 13 of the 14 original factors. After deleting substance use items and allowing for correlated error across the support factors, the 13-factor mo… Show more

“…Of the seven studies, two studies conducted further analyses and identified higher-order structures. One identified a three-factor solution of active, social support, and disengaged coping in a sample of pregnant women in the USA (Peters et al, 2020). The other study identified five second-order factors including problem solving, support seeking, avoidance, cognitive restructuration, and denial coping in a sample of French college students (Doron et al, 2014).…”

“…Among the 7 studies using the theoretical 14-factor solution alone, 6 replicated the original factor structure with good fit, while one study did not (Peters et al, 2020) (refer to Table 2). Of the seven studies, two studies conducted further analyses and identified higher-order structures.…”

“…Items are scored on a 4-point scale: 'I haven't been doing this at all' (0 points), 'I've been doing this a little bit' (1 point), 'I've been doing this a medium amount' (2 points), 'I've been doing this a lot' (3 points). Psychometric properties of the Brief COPE scales have been previously reported (Carver et al, 1989;Hagan et al, 2017;Peters et al, 2020). In the study reported here, Cronbach's alpha for each of the Brief COPE scales at the in-hospital assessment was as follows: self-distraction (0.72), active coping (0.77), denial (0.80), substance use (0.94), use of emotional support (0.87), use of instrumental support (0.82), behavioural disengagement (0.76), venting (0.68), positive reframing (0.81), planning (0.78), acceptance (0.67), religion (0.73), humour (0.70) and self-blame (0.90).…”
