Psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) in a sample of community adults

Abstract: Background There is a growing attention on intuitive eating (IE) styles in the Western world that has not yet reached Arab countries, which is likely due to the lack of psychometrically sound measures of the IE construct for Arabic-speaking people. The current study aims to examine the psychometric properties of an Arabic translation of the most widely used measure of IE—the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2), in an Arabic-speaking community population from Lebanon. … Show more

“…The result of the bootstrap resampling process and corresponding item stability analysis showed excellent stability and configural invariance in the present study. Moreover, only a few studies have examined the gender invariance of the IES‐2 (e.g., Fekih‐Romdhane et al, 2023; Swami et al, 2021; Tylka & Kroon Van Diest, 2013) and no previous study has presented the measurement invariance of the IES‐2 in Chinese populations. There were no gender differences in terms of metric invariance found in the present study, which indicates the network loadings of the IES‐2 are invariant across Chinese women and men.…”

“…To our knowledge, previous validation studies of the IES‐2 have focused on traditional latent variable modeling approaches (e.g., exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses; Fekih‐Romdhane et al, 2023; Saunders et al, 2018; Swami et al, 2020; Tylka & Kroon Van Diest, 2013). However, traditional latent variable modeling approaches often rely on many parametric and distributional assumptions (e.g., the often unrealistic assumption of local independence between symptoms; Borsboom & Cramer, 2013).…”

“…The higher the scores, the higher the IE. The validated Arabic version has been used [ 23 ] (α = 0.84).…”

“…Despite this evidence, little attention has been devoted so far to this topic in Arab countries; which is partly due to a lack of sensitive measures to detect manifestations of muscularity-oriented nature in Arabic-speaking populations [ 48 ]. Available instruments in the Arabic language are rather thinness-focused, such as the Eating Attitude Test [ 49 , 50 ], the Eating disorder examination questionnaire [ 51 , 52 ], the Inflexible Eating Questionnaire (IEQ) [ 53 ], the Nine Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Screen (NIAS) [ 54 ], the Intuitive Eating Scale [ 55 ], and the Eating Disorder Inventory [ 56 , 57 ]. The only muscularity-specific measure that has recently been validated in Arabic is the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory [ 58 ].…”
