Psychometric properties of Hope Scales: A systematic review

Abstract: The results show that no robust and valid scale exists for measuring hope. It highlights important gaps in psychometric properties of hope scales. Despite more than 40 years of research and development of hope scales, the currently available scales do not meet the standards of psychometric evaluation. This calls for efforts to improve the quality of hope scales.

“…In this study, both groups do not significantly differ in both, hope and distress. For the only minor differences in hope there are three likely causes, (i) higher-grade brain tumor patients deny their devastating prognosis (Williams et al, 2015), (ii) the measurement is not specific enough to detect even small differences in hope levels between higher-and lower-grade brain tumor patients (Redlich-Amirav et al, 2018;Rustøen et al, 2018), and (iii) hope with its dispositional aspects (Demirli et al, 2015) is a coping mechanism (Clayton et al, 2005). Hope as a coping mechanism may even increase when the prognosis is poor (Palacio and Arias, 2018).…”

“…The questions are rated on a 6-point Likert scale from 0 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The scale is relatively short, user-friendly, and has good psychometric properties, such as internal consistency, stability, and structural validity [ 14 ].…”

“…Following theoretical arguments related to Snyder’s [ 64 ] hope theory, our mediation model posited that hope would influence the positivity ratio and mediate the relation between self-control and the positivity ratio. Studies have supported the importance of hope among adults, demonstrating that high levels of hope serve as a buffer against stress and trauma and are associated with higher wellbeing and numerous positive outcomes [ 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ]. In health psychology, studies have revealed that people with high levels of hope exhibit more constructive thinking when problem solving [ 70 ].…”
