Psychometric properties, factor structure, and German population norms of the multidimensional fatigue inventory (MFI-20)

Abstract: ObjectiveThe Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) is commonly used, but its factor structure remains unclear. The MFI-20 consists of five subscales (general fatigue, physical fatigue, reduced activity, reduced motivation, and mental fatigue). This study investigates the psychometric properties, including the factor structure, of a general German population sample and tests group hypotheses on gender and age. Another objective is to provide normative data by gender and age groups.MethodsUsing data from a… Show more

“…The Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) is a 20-item self-report instrument consisting of 5 subscales: 1) general fatigue, 2) physical fatigue, 3) reduced activity, 4) reduced motivation, and 5) mental fatigue. 21 , 22 Each subscale consists of 4 items with possible answers on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = yes, that is true; 5 = no, this is not true). Higher scores indicate higher levels of fatigue.…”

“…Fatigue syndrome was diagnosed at a score of ≥12 for any of the five scales of the MFI-20, and a higher score indicated a higher level of fatigue (severe), while a lower score indicated a lower level of fatigue. The MFI-20 was designed to prevent and minimize the influence of subjective factors on participants [20] and has demonstrated reliability in measuring fatigue in the general population [21].…”

“…The WAI score may be rated low , moderate (28)(29)(30)(31)(32)(33)(34)(35)(36), good (37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43), or excellent (44-49). All questionnaires applied had been validated in German populations [25][26][27][28].…”
