Psychometric properties and factorial invariance of the satisfaction with life scale in Latino immigrants in Chile, Spain, and United States

Abstract: Background: Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) is the most widely used instrument to assess subjective wellbeing in different populations. Aim: The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the psychometric properties and the factorial invariance of the SWLS in Latino immigrants living in Chile, Spain, and the United States. Method: A total of 662 participants over the age of 18 and who have lived in the host country for more than a year participated. Results: The results provide evidence of good i… Show more

“…Regarding reliability, although the magnitude of the omega coefficient was below that obtained in some previous studies [ 28 , 48 , 49 , 51 , 55 ], it was still considered acceptable, as in other studies that tested internal consistency [ 47 , 50 ]. It is still unknown whether the reliability is affected by the number of response options in the Collao Quechua SWLS; therefore, future research should address such an analysis using the item response theory (IRT) to deepen the invariant properties of the items, addressing cultural differences [ 53 ].…”

“…This finding is consistent with that reported in previous studies, both in Peruvian samples [ 25 , 28 ] and in samples from other countries [ [47] , [48] , [49] , [50] , [51] , [52] , [53] ]. In fact, previous studies that evaluated the measurement invariance of the SWLS by culture or nationality presented results that support the 1-dimensional structure [ 46 , 54 , 55 ].…”

“…The SWLS has been translated into many languages and used in various geographical contexts. Overall, sufficient evidence of the reliability, validity, and unidimensionality of the SWLS has been reported [ 51 , 52 ]. In South Africa, Padmanabhanunni and Pretorius [ 53 ] reported satisfactory reliability estimates ( α and ω = 0.89) for the SWLS among a sample of young adults.…”

“…Social network robustness and social support are important protective factors of mental health for immigrant communities [7,34,35]. Connection to a social group is known to insulate immigrants from social stressors by providing a sense of safety, understanding and belonging [35][36][37][38][39]. Social support has been explored as a mediator between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms [40,41].…”
