The psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have substantially changed and this requires a new measurement tool reflecting these changes. The COVID-19 Impact Scale (CIS) assesses the psychological stress responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study, for the first time, examined the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the CIS in university students by focusing on its internal consistency reliability, factor structure, criterion validity and predictive validity. Using a cross-sectional research design, data were collected from 486 university students studying at a public university in Turkey. Participants completed the CIS and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale-6 using an online survey. The results showed that the CIS had excellent internal consistency reliability. Results of exploratory and confirmatory yielded a one-factor solution for the scale with high factor loadings. Also, the results showed that the CIS was not only significantly positively correlated with psychological distress but also accounted for a significant amount of unique variance in the prediction of psychological distress after controlling for the effects of age and gender. These results suggest that the CIS is a psychometrically sound scale with good evidence of reliability and validity in Turkish university students. The CIS can be confidently used for research and clinical practices.

Background: Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) is a methodology classically used to relate continuous (observed) indicators to latent variables through a measurement model. Estimation approaches have been proposed to deal with situations in which the indicators do not follow a multivariate normal distribution, particularly when they are asymmetric, ordinal or binary. Bayesian Confirmatory Factor Analysis (BCFA), which includes prior distributions for model parameters, has been used for such setups. Literature about CFA and BCFA for binary indicators is still scarce even though several applications in Epidemiology and Public Health could benefit from its use. Objective: To systematize and discuss the main characteristics and computational implementation of the CFA and BCFA with binary indicators in R and Mplus software for the measurement of antenatal care quality in Primary Health Care (PHC) in Brazil. Methods: Data from the external evaluation of the Brazilian National Program for the Improvement of Access to and Quality of Primary Health Care (PMAQ-AB) were used to assess the quality of antenatal care (construct). Ten binary (adequate/inadequate) indicators (items) were used in the measurement model considering the frequentist and Bayesian CFA. Results: CFA results (standardized and unstandardized estimates, goodness-of-fit statistics and factor scores) were provided in R and Mplus. Reliability measures, however, are not readily available in Mplus. Estimates from CFA and BCFA were close using noninformative priors. Sensitivy analyses for priors specification do not indicate substantial changes in the results. Conclusions: Measurement models with binary indicators, under both frequentist and Bayesian frameworks, should be considered more often as they can be applied in several health analyses for definition of constructs or latent variables. We provided a detailed tutorial, with recommendations and illustration of its use, that enhances the description of the characteristics of a population that can not be directly observed and/or are measured by a set of several indicators, such as quality of health care.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant long psychological impacts that require a novel measurement tool to capture the changes in such impacts. To this end, the COVID-19 Impact Scale (CIS) was developed as an instrument to evaluate psychological responses associated with the pandemic, and has shown evidence of a one-factor structure. The CIS was initially created using an Korea University students sample, and has since been translated and validated in Turkish. A total of 504 College students, aged 17–25, took part in the study from two universities in Jinan, located in Shandong Province, Eastern China, via an online survey platform. They were administered the Chinese versions of the following self-report instruments: Mandarin Chinese CIS, Fear of COVID-19 Scale, Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and Satisfaction With Life Scale. Moreover, a sample of 86 participants who provided their contact information and agreed to participate in the second-round survey were asked to reassess using the Mandarin Chinese CIS after a period of 3 weeks following the initial testing. Results showed that Mandarin Chinese CIS had good internal consistency and test–retest reliability. Additionally, the Mandarin Chinese CIS presented good criterion validity and estimates of convergent validity and incremental validity. In confirmatory factor analysis, the one-factor model showed an acceptable fit after incorporating correlations between error terms. Our findings suggest that the Mandarin Chinese CIS is a reliable and valid self-report tool that demonstrates robust psychometric properties and acceptable construct validity when used with a Chinese university students.
