Psychometric Evaluation of the Newcastle Satisfaction With Nursing Scales

Abstract: This study tested the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scales through factor analysis with 659 medical and surgical inpatients. One factor was found for the Scale Satisfaction and 4 factors for the Scale Experiences: Carelessness, Emotional support, Relationship/information, and Caring times. This validation makes available to nurses and managers a multidimensional tool able to discriminate between different care experiences and to identify areas for car… Show more

“…Out of the questionnaires reviewed presenting a factorial analysis of the scale (Hinshaw & Atwood, ; Chen et al., ; La‐Monica et al., ; Calixto‐Olalde et al., ; Mira et al., ; Piredda et al., , ; Laschinger et al., ; Davis & Bush ). it may be observed that the results reached in different factorial structures of each tool are similar to those obtained for the NICSS , making them consistent with the psychometric findings of perception measurement instruments, particularly when constructs are evaluated, where the metric fit is a very slow and complex process, requiring multiple studies with large samples.…”

“…This is a 14-item self-report questionnaire as- Satisfaction with nursing care was measured using the Italian version of the Newcastle Satisfaction with Nurses Scale (Piredda et al, 2007;Thomas, McColl, Priest, Bond, & Boys, 1996). Only the dimension of Emotional support on the Scale Experiences was administered to investigate the extent to which patients experienced emotional support from nurses (Piredda et al, 2015). This dimension includes six items ranging from 1 (disagree completely) to 7 (agree completely).…”

“…These data can serve as a basis for clinical staff reflections and discussions on the behaviours that are perceived as more or less caring. This study provides clinical nurses and nurse managers with a measure that can serve as an approximation or as analytical indicator for evaluating the quality of nursing care, and it can help to identify areas for improvement (Piredda et al., ).…”

“…Effectively measuring nurse caring is critical for evaluating the effectiveness of nursing and monitoring care quality (Piredda et al., ). Actually, caring is key to the quality of most nursing interventions (Clarke, Watson, & Brewer, ; Wu, Larrabee, & Putman, ), as it can have a strong impact on the relationships between patient and nurse and their experiences of the care received or provided (Persky, Nelson, Watson, & Bent, ).…”
