Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience greater levels of stress, anxiety, and depression than parents of children with other developmental disorders. Mothers experience stress in caring, while loving care is needed, which in this study defined as compassionate love, to optimize the development of children with ASD. This study intends to observe family environmental factors and affection factors that affect compassionate love. The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between husband's social support, emotional competence, and compassionate love of the mother of children with ASD. This research used structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis method supported by Lisrel program. Subjects consisted of 205 mothers of children with ASD, from Semarang, Yogyakarta and Solo, Indonesia. Data collection used a questionnaire link form distributed online and scale distribution manually. The study used three measuring instruments, namely the Provision of Social Relationship scale for husband's social support, the Emotional Competence scale, and the Compassionate Love scale. The hypothesis of this study is that emotional competence mediates the relationship between husband's social support and compassionate love of the mother of the children with ASD. The results of model test of the effect of husband's social support, emotional competence on compassionate love matched the research data (classified as good fit). Husband's social support has a significant effect on compassionate love, through emotional competence. These results prove that emotional competence is an mediating variable. Limitations, suggestions, and research implications are discussed further.

Balance of Family Caring in Families with Chronically Ill Children: A Concept AnalysisC urrent advances in medical technology have helped extend the average life expectancy of people in the world, including children with chronic illnesses. Most chronic illnesses do not fix themselves and are generally not cured. The progression of chronic illness may be rapidly or slowly progressive, depending on several factors. The generally-accepted characteristics of chronic illness include permanent change, disability, irreversible pathology, need for respite, and long-term or permanent need for continuous care. 1,2 The global chronic illness situation reveals 10-15% of children aged under 16 years have been diagnosed with a chronic illness that leads to increasing numbers of children with chronic illness (asthma, type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, heart disease, cancer, thalassemia, hemophilia, nephrotic syndrome, etc.) with more than 1,000 million people in the United States (U.S.) 3 Moreover, about 80-90% of chronically ill children caused by diabetes mellitus, kidney disease, or heart disease will have an increased average life expectancy until they are 20 years old with proper care. 4 These findings reflect the increase of chronically ill children that requires continuous care provided by family caregivers who have a key role in providing quality care for their children. 5 According to the illness trajectory of chronic illness, chronically ill children and their families have to encounter uncertain situations due to constantly changing circumstances based on the illness trajectory of chronic illness that differs in each child. [6][7][8] In this regard, they are sometimes inconstant, acute, relapsing, or crisis phases, all of which can occur with the children and their families. 9 Since the children have many limitations in taking care of themselves with limited capability caused by developmental and chronic conditions, family caring is a challenging role for the entire family to provide quality care for children with chronic illness. 5,10

Having a child with an autistic spectrum disorder is a challenge for parents, especially mothers, which can hinder the fulfillment of optimal psychological functions so that the mother’s psychological well-being is disturbed. Internal situations such as gratitude and the presence of external support from the family can be factors that can encourage increased psychological well-being in mothers. This study observed the effects of gratitude and family support on mothers’ psychological well-being with children with an autism spectrum disorder. The instruments in this study used the gratitude scale, the family support scale and Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scales-short version distributed online. The subject in this study was 98 people, and the data collected were analyzed using the Doubled Linear Regression test using JASP software. The results showed the significance value of p0.05; thus, gratitude and family support had a role or effect on mothers’ psychological well-being with children with an autism spectrum disorder. Meanwhile, the effective contribution for gratitude was 17.39%, and family support was 21.53%. For future research, gratitude and emotion-based therapies such as emotion regulation training can be used as an intervention in experimental research to improve psychological well-being.
