Psychological Test Performance in Patients Over Sixty. II. Paraphrenia, Arteriosclerotic Psychosis and Acute Confusion

Abstract: The previous paper of this series (Roth and Hopkins, 1953) described test performance in senile and affective psychosis. The same tests have been administered to patients in three other diagnostic groups: paraphrenia, arteriosclerotic psychosis, and acute confusional states. These five clinical categories account for the majority of mental hospital admissions in patients over the age of 60.

“…Furthermore, it may be informative for clinical practice to learn whether there are specific cognitive profiles that predict a conversion to dementia or a relative stability in cognitive functioning. Research on the characterization of cognitive function in neurodegenerative conditions compared to mixed groups of LOS and VLOSLP has mainly focused on AD [46][47][48][49] and (the behavioral variant of) FTD [22]. Also, vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) with concomitant psychosis was studied [48].…”

“…The study was conceived as a logical successor to Roth's Graylingwell investigations (Roth and Morrissey, 1952;Roth and Hopkins, 1953;Hopkins and Roth, 1953;and Roth, 1955). If five distinct clinical categories of mental illness existed in old age then it should be possible to demonstrate differences in brain neuropathology between them: notably between the functional and organic cases, and within the latter category, between acute and chronic disorders.…”
