Psychological strains and depression in Chinese rural populations

Abstract: The study verifies that there is strong correlation between the psychological strains and depression in Chinese rural populations. It is suggested that reducing psychological strains may be a possible approach to reduce the prevalence of depression so as to help bring down the suicide risk in rural China.

“…Multivariate Logistic Regression study has got the risk and protective indicators of suicide attempt, the conclusion is consistent with the previous literature. The previous literature indicated that family history of suicide [31], mental problem [5,32,33], low education level [34], poor health, aspiration strain [35], hopelessness [36,37], impulsivity [38][39][40], depression [41] are the risk factors for suicide attempt, the current study drew the similar conclution with previous literature. Corresponding previous measures such as carrying out the screening of high risk population of family history of suicide and mental disorders, improving education level and healthy, reducing the aspiration strain should be taken to prevent suicide attempts.…”

“…In table 1, the description is also a good proof of it. The religion is not a popular social value in China may lead the person to depression and other negative emotions, and then lead to suicide (Zhang and Lv, 2014). Course attendance and appearance self-evaluation are negative predictors for suicidal ideation.…”

“…Psychological strain is comprised of at least two sources, rather than simply one (Zhang et al, 2011). When the individual is unable to give up any one of the two conflicting factors, it will experience the psychological distress, and the psychological distress forces the individual to make rational choices, which may commit suicide in order to alleviate the psychological strain (Zhang et al, 2011;Zhang and Lv, 2014).…”

“…Psychological strain was hypothesized to precede psychopathology and suicidal behaviors in China (Zhang & Lv, 2014; Zhang et al, 2011) and it was a function of sociology and environment factors which may affect an individual’s lives, and also how one copes with negative life events. Although the relationship between NLEs and sucide attempts have been empirically established by many previous studies, not many studies have focused on how negative life events affect suicide attempts in China, moreso, in rural population of China.…”
