Objective: This study aimed to establish and assess the Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) prediction model for suicide attempt, so as to improve the individual prediction accuracy. Method: Data was collected from a wide range case-control suicide attempt survey. 659 serious suicide attempters (case group) were randomly recruited through the hospital emergency and patient registration system from 13 rural counties in China. Each case was matched the control by the same community, gender, and similar age (±2 ages). Face to face interviews were conducted for each subject with the structured questionnaire. Logistic regression was applied to preliminarily screen the factors and BPNN was used to establish the prediction model of suicide attempt. Results: Multivariate logistic regression indicated that family history of suicide (OR=4.146), mental problem (OR=3.876) Low education level, poor health, aspiration strain, hopelessness, impulsivity, depression are the risk predictors and social support, coping skills, healthy community are the protect predictors for suicide attempt. Repetitious data simulation process of BPNN indicated that three-layer BPNN with 9 hidden layer neurons is the optimal prediction model. The sensitivity (67.6%), specificity (93.9%), positive predictive value (86.0%), negative predictive value (84.1%), total coincidence rate (84.6%) all manifested that it is excellent to distinguish suicide attempt case. Conclusions: The BPNN method is applicative, feasible, credible and good discriminative effect for suicide attempt. The BPNN established has significant clinical meaning to distinguish suicide attempt for the clinical psychiatrist and lay theoretical foundation for artificial intelligence expert assisted diagnosis system for suicide attempt in the future.

The multiple linear regression analysis was used to exam the possible risk factors for suicidal ideation. Results: Grade, religion, course attendance, appearance self-evaluation, depression, social support and psychological strains measured by differential values strain and relative deprivation strain were significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Conclusions: Chinese young people' psychological strains were predictors of suicidal ideation with the important demographic variables controlled for. Contribution/ Originality:This study is one of very few studies which have investigated the association between psychological strains and suicidal ideation among Chinese young people. It revives an understanding that psychological strains especially measured by differential values strain and relative deprivation strain were significantly associated with suicidal ideation.

The Impact of Negative Life Events on Attempted Suicide in Rural China

This study aims to explore the impact of negative life events (NLEs) on attempted suicide in a Chinese cultural setting. The sample comprised 791 suicide attempters and an equal number of controls matched on age, sex, and location from selected rural counties in China. Conditional logistic regression model was used to examine the association between NLEs and suicide risk. The impact of NLEs on attempted suicide was further examined using regression-based method to explore its mediation effect. The types of NLEs that were most likely to precede a suicide attempt in rural sample included the events in marriage/love, family/home, and friend/relationship. Rural women were more likely to experience more interpersonal conflicts than rural men. Approximately 75.6% of suicide attempters had experienced at least one NLE, and NLEs were strongly associated with attempted suicide. Total effect (0.676), direct effect (0.501), and the total indirect effect (0.301) of NLEs on suicide attempts were significantly mediated by hopelessness and depression. NLEs play a crucial role in predicting suicidal attempt in rural China, and they are mediated by depression and hopelessness.
