Psychological Strain and Suicidal Ideation in Athletes: The Multiple Mediating Effects of Hopelessness and Depression

Abstract: The present study aims to examine the relationship between psychological strain, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, and depression among Chinese athletes. Participants were 774 Chinese athletes (454 men and 320 women), with a range of ages from 12 to 35 (M = 18.47, SD = 3.39). The structural equation modeling method was used to examine the multiple mediating effects of hopelessness and depression between psychological strain and suicidal ideation. As expected, a positive correlation between psychological strain,… Show more

“…Those with personal Covid-19 exposure were found to suffer more from depression and eventually SI (Zhou et al, 2021 ). The results are in line with the literature as depression significantly mediated the relationship between PS and SI among athletes (Sun et al, 2020 ). Polanco-Roman et al ( 2016 ) reported similar findings in their study, where stress-related symptoms are associated with SI through depression but not rumination.…”

“…Brooding and reflection at low levels may be adaptive as it leads one to solve the situation rather than thinking to end one’s life. Low levels of brooding may act as a reminder to get rid of the low mood, while SI is predicted by other factors (like PS) (Cheref et al, 2015 ; Sun et al, 2020 ). Reflection is a more adaptive form of rumination (Treynor, 2003 ) that helps to reflect and find ways to problem solve the situation.…”

“…Moreover, with increasing physiological age, athletes' performance will reach a "plateau, " which makes it difficult to achieve significant progress (Corso, 2018). At this time, they may feel that they have invested too much in sports and do not have much opportunity to develop other life skills (Sun et al, 2020). This situation makes adolescent athletes worry that they are not equipped to face life away from competitive sports.…”

“…Adolescents spend a considerable amount of their free time with their peers as parental influence decreases (Ridao et al, 2021). Adolescence is not always the same in all cultural contexts, being differences between European and Anglo-Saxon countries compared to Eastern Societies (Yeung, 2021), especially for athletes (Sun et al, 2020). However, parents always remain as an important source of support to their children (Gallarin and Alonso-Arbiol, 2012).…”
