Nationality as an Influential Variable with Regard to the Social Skills and Academic Success of Immigrant Students

This study aims to expand the existing scientific, theoretical and empirical knowledge about the influence of the variables age, gender, nationality and place of residence on the probability of developing social skills that generate social wellbeing, and, in addition, to identify the relationship between the most influential variable and the academic success of immigrant students. We hope that the educational community, in an intercultural context, can benefit from and apply this knowledge to assist immigrant students. In this study, a sample of n = 749 students aged between 12 and 18, of 41 different nationalities, is analyzed using the Social Skills Scale for Young Immigrants (SSSYI). Data analysis is performed with the SPSS and STATA statistical programs. Multiple linear regression (MLR) analyses verify that nationality is the most influential variable. In addition, when calculating the Pearson correlation, high and positive correlations are found between social skills, nationality and students’ grades, with which academic success was measured. In conclusion, we find that students who emigrated from the European continent present better social skills, better social wellbeing and greater academic success.

According to data of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, various forms of violations of human behavior are seen in the education and youth environment, including through immersion in destructive ideologies on the Internet. These data write down the need to study the factors affecting the psychological safety of the environment, especially the educational and youth environment (students and schoolchildren). In this regard, the purpose of the study is to identify the influence of social, psychological and organizational factors on the psychological safety of the educational environment. The study was conducted based on big data analysis of 164 schools. They include data from schools on the following indicators: “suicides”, “suicide attempts”, “crimes”, “psychological competencies of managers”, “staff turnover”, etc. The statistical method of big data analysis is the leading one in describing the results of the study. Factor analysis was used to describe a multidimensional model of psychological safety of the educational environment. A two-sample F-test was used to compare the sample populations. The results of the study allowed us to identify factors influencing the psychological safety of the educational environment: high turnover of teaching staff, lack of psychological competencies in the administration of educational organizations, the number of suicidal attempts, a large number of representations of the prosecutor's office, etc. The results of the study made it possible to form instructions to the executive authorities of the Republic of Tatarstan signed by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan – Chairman of the Anti-Terrorist Commission in the Republic of Tatarstan. The instructions are aimed at improving the effectiveness of the psychological service in education; the formation of psychological competencies of key managers responsible for the organization of psychological, social and educational activities; the inclusion in the job descriptions of key managers responsible for the organization of psychological, social and educational activities of new labor functions for the formation of psychological security of the educational environment, as well as the identification and support of students in need of socio-psychological support.

<p>Global social transformations affected people are taking place in the modern world. This influence can negatively affect representatives of the younger generation – students who do not have personal and social maturity and are in the process of professional development. The problem of the study is to identify the resources for psychological safety of students in a tense sociocultural environment. The article presents a review of scientific works from 2019 to 2023 using the electronic bibliographic databases RSCI and Scopus. More than 70 scientific articles with the results of theoretical and empirical studies of the problem of human psychological safety resources in a tense sociocultural environment were analyzed. The studies involved civilians living in territories with special conditions, including territories of military conflicts: teenagers, adults, students. Based on the results of a systematic review, a theoretical model is proposed. It includes external and internal resources for the psychological safety of students in a tense sociocultural environment. The features of students' socialization and the resources of the educational environment are identified as key external resources. Internal ones include cognitive regulation of emotions, constructive defense mechanisms, prosocial values and social intelligence, which act as the main resources for overcoming traumatic experiences, influencing subjective well-being and ensuring the psychological safety of students. The proposed theoretical model can serve as the basis for the development of psychological support programs for students. Research prospects can be presented in the context of empirical verification of the theoretical model.</p>
