Objective and Background: Attachment styles and empathy with respect to couples' functioning during the period of transition to parenthood have rarely been studied. The aim of the present study was to examine the link between attachment security and perceived empathy as well as their role in the adjustment to parenthood. It was hypothesised that secure parents, as opposed to insecure ones, would perceive themselves and their partners as more empathic after the child's birth and, as a consequence, more effectively adapt to parenthood. Methods: Sixty-seven couples experiencing their first transition to parenthood participated in the study. Their attachment styles were measured before the birth of the child. Empathy (as perceived in oneself and in a partner) and adjustment to parenthood were measured when the child was a few months old. Results:The results indicated that new parents with more secure, less anxious-ambivalent, and less avoidant attachment styles expressed and perceived more empathy in their relationships, and they were better adjusted to parenthood. A partner's perceived empathy was found to be a mediator between one's attachment styles and their adjustment to parenthood. In particular, men's self-assessed empathy and men's empathy as perceived by their wives was a significant mediator of the relationship between one's attachment styles and adjustment to parenthood. Conclusion: Attachment styles are associated with the empathy of partners (both declared and perceived), which in turn predicts their better adjustment to parenthood.

SummaryAim: The decision to quit breastfeeding is strongly influenced by feelings such as physical or psychological fatigue. Research shows that women with higher levels of breastfeeding self-efficacy are able to better cope with difficulties and continue to breastfeed for longer. The purpose of this study was to find out whether the autonomy of a mother's motivation has an effect on her breastfeeding self-efficacy. Furthermore, the study examined the relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy and such indicators of well-being as the frequency of experiencing positive and negative emotions, life satisfaction and the occurrence of somatic symptoms. Method:The sample consisted of 93 breastfeeding mothers aged 21 to 42 years. The survey was conducted online. Participants answered a questionnaire measuring their level of autonomous motivation to breastfeed, their breastfeeding self-efficacy, the level of somatic stress experienced, the frequency of experiencing positive and negative emotions, and life satisfaction. Results:The results of the study confirmed that the more autonomous the mother's motivation to breastfeed her baby, the higher her breastfeeding self-efficacy. Self-efficacy turned out to be a significant predictor of the frequency of experiencing positive emotions, negative emotions, and somatic stress symptoms. No relationship was found between the mother's self-efficacy and her reported life satisfaction. Conclusions:Autonomous motivation in breastfeeding mothers has a positive effect on their breastfeeding self-efficacy. The higher the breastfeeding self-efficacy, the more positive the breastfeeding mothers' subjective experiences. Introducción: el apego materno es el conjunto de conductas y vínculos que la madre establece en torno al recién nacido. El ingreso en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales supone una barrera en el establecimiento de estos primeros lazos. Objetivo: el principal objetivo del presente estudio es comparar el grado de apego valorando dicha separación, así como identificar aquellas variables que podrían influir en su establecimiento. Material y métodos: un total de 82 madres, divididas en dos grupos (O-U), participaron en este estudio ex postfacto comparativo causal mediante la cumplimentación del cuestionario Maternal Attachment Inventory, la entrevista y la revisión de la historia clínica. Resultados: se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en la puntuación MAI entre madres del Grupo Obstetricia (99’67) y del Grupo UCIN (91’64), del mismo modo se señaló la edad gestacional y la alimentación como factores influyentes. Discusión y conclusión: la separación tras el ingreso en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos Neonatales dificulta el establecimiento de los primeros vínculos maternos. Es necesario valorar los diferentes factores que influyen en esta situación y realizar futuras intervenciones para mejorar la relación materno-filial.
