Psychological Correlates of Self-reported Disease Activity in Ankylosing Spondylitis

Abstract: Purpose To investigate the role of psychological variables in self-reported disease activity in patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), while controlling for demographic and medical variables. Patients and Methods 294 AS patients meeting modified New York Criteria completed psychological measures evaluating depression, resilience, active and passive coping, internality and helplessness. Demographic, clinical, and radiologic data were also collected. Univariate and multivariate analyses were completed to d… Show more

“…An inverse correlation was also found between resilience scores and the progression of illness (activity of the disease in ankylosing spondylitis, control of glycemic level, and severity of depression) (Brionez et al, 2010;DeNisco, 2011;Wingo et al, 2010), and an association between resilience and quality of life and health promotional behavior (Robottom et al, 2012;Strauss et al, 2007).…”

“…Five articles (Brionez et al, 2010;Erim et al, 2010;Holden et al, 2012;Mangelli, Gribbin, Buchi, Allard, & Sensky, 2002;Ponarovsky, Amital, Lazarov, Kotler, & Amital, 2011;Robottom et al, 2012;Wingo et al, 2010) found an inverse relationship between the resilience scores and anxiety and depression scores, which suggests that high resilience scores may protect against the development of psychiatric diseases, of which there is high prevalence in chronic conditions (Bachen, Chesney, & Criswell, 2009;Erim et al, 2010). Robottom et al also found a negative relationship between the resilience scores and incapacitation and somatization; and an association between resilience and better quality of physical and mental life, which is in agreement with the literature (Robottom et al, 2012;Strauss et al, 2007) and between resilience and health promotion behavior such as adequate nutrition, stress reduction, self-realization, and appropriate sports (Ma et al, 2013).…”

“…Helplessness in particular, a personal factor, appeared to be an important variable associated with the level of presenteeism and the duration of sick leave. Helplessness is not often included in outcome studies, but whenever it was explored, it seemed to relate strongly to disease activity (), physical function (), patient acceptable symptom state (), and overall health‐related QOL (), and may even serve as a mediator of the relationship between disease activity and functional limitations (). In the literature on work outcomes in AS, Healey et al confirmed that lower self‐efficacy, but also increasing age, anxiety, depression, and disease activity, contributed to the WLQ‐16 ().…”

“…The PSOAS study is an ongoing, longitudinal study of AS patients from four sites in the US: Cedars-Sinai Medical center, Los Angeles; the University of Texas at Houston; the University of California, San Francisco; and the National Institute of Health, Bethesda (8). Multiplex and singleton AS cases were enrolled in this study.…”
