SUMMARY A five‐year follow‐up study of children who had had spells of head‐banging or breath‐holding at three years was carried out to see whether these symptoms have any behavioural sequelae. Of 36 children with breath‐holding spells at three years, none still had them. 34 children had had spells of head‐banging, and three still had the symptom at follow‐up. The children with a history of head‐banging were more restless and emotionally unstable at follow‐up, but there was no significant difference between the index groups and their controls in other problems of behaviour or development. RÉSUMÉ Histoire naturelle et signification pronostique du heurt de tête, balancement de tête et retenue volontaire de respiration Une étude longitudinale durant cinq ans, d'enfants ayant eu des accts de heurts de téte et de retenue de respiration à trois ans, a été entreprise pour voir si ces symptômes avaient des suites comportementales. Chez 36 enfants avec accès de retenue de respiration à trois ans, aucun ne les gardait. 34 enfants avaient eu des crises de heurts de tête et trois d'entre eux les conservaient. Les enfants ayant présenté une histoire de heurt de téte étaient plus remuants et émotivement instables tout au long de l'étude mais il n'y avait pas de différences significatives entre groupes expérimentaux et contrôles pour d'autres problèmes de comportement ou de développement. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Verlauf und prognostische Redeutung der Jactatio capitis und des ‘Wegbleibens’ Kinder, die im Alter von drei Jahren Anfalle von Jactatio capitis und ‘Wegbleiben’ hatten, wurdenüber fünf Jahre nachuntersucht um herauszufinden, ob diese Symptome irgendwelche Auswirkungen auf das Verhalten hatten. Die 36 Kinder rnit anfallsweisem ‘Wegbleiben’ im Alter von drei Jahren waren alle unauffallig. Von den 34 Kindern mit Jactatio capitis hatten drei bei der Nachuntersuchung noch immer dieses Symptom. Die Kinder mit Jactatio capitis waren bei den Kontrolluntersuchungen unruhiger und emotional wenig gefestigt. es fanden sich jedoch keine signifikanten Unterschiede zwischen den Index‐Gruppen und ihren Kontrollen bei anderen Problemen in Bezug auf das Verhalten oder die Entwicklung. RESUMEN Historia natural y significación predictiva del bambholeo de la caheza, rotación de la caheza y crisis de pérdida del llanto Se realizó un estudio durante cinco años que habian tenido episodios de balanceo de la cabeza, o de pérdida del llanto a la edad de ires años, con el objeto de ver si estos sintomos habian dejado alguna secuela conductual. De los 36 niños con espasmos del llanto a los tres años, ninguno los seguia teniendo. 34 niños habian tenido episodios de balanceo de la cabeza y de ellos tres todavia los tenian. Los niiios con una historia de balanceo de la cabeza eran más inquietos y emocionalmente inestables, pero no habia diferencia significativa entre los grupos estudiados y sus controles en otros problemas de conducta o desarrollo.
