BackgroundConsultation liaison psychiatry (CLP) as a subspecialty is defined as the area of clinical psychiatry that encompasses clinical understanding, teaching and research activities of psychiatrists and allied health professionals in the non-psychiatric divisions of a general hospital. Psychiatric comorbidity of inpatients in tertiary care hospitals is huge. However, the amount of research in India in the field of consultation liaison is strikingly low.AimTo investigate the sociodemographic profile and psychiatric and physical subtypes of illness in patients admitted in other departments and referred to psychiatry department.MethodsThe study population comprised all consecutive inpatients referred for psychiatric consultation from other departments of a multispecialty tertiary care teaching hospital over 3 months. In a semistructured proforma, sociodemographic profile, referring departments, reasons for referral, referral rate, psychiatric diagnosis and physical illness diagnosis were recorded and analysed using descriptive statistics.Results172 patients were included and assessed after referral from various departments, of which 56.4% were male and 43.6% were female. The mean age was about 33.95 years, with majority of the patients in the 21–30 years age group. The referral rate was 1.1%. The maximum referrals were from the medicine department, with abnormal behaviour (26.2%) being the most common reason for referral, followed by alleged suicide attempt or self-harm (24.4%), anxiety (10.5%), substance use (10%) and disorientation (7.6%). The most common psychiatric disorder among patients was depressive disorder (24.4%), followed by substance use disorder (19.7%), schizophrenia and psychotic disorder (9.3%), and stress and trauma-related disorder (8.1%).ConclusionThere are very few psychiatry referrals and an alarmingly low referral rate, given the psychiatric morbidities in the medical setting. Psychiatry training should have more weightage across different medical specialties and liaison activities between psychiatry and other disciplines should be augmented, which can lead to a better understanding of psychiatric symptomatology, early symptom recognition, swift referral and ensuring follow-up, which, in turn, would be key to improving CLP services.

There is a dearth of studies related to consultation-liaison psychiatry in Bangladesh. The psychiatric referral rates in this country are very low, considering the higher rates of psychiatric morbidity in patients who attend various departments of a general hospital. This was a descriptive study consisting of all the cases referred for psychiatric consultation from inpatient units of various departments of BIRDEM General Hospital, Dhaka from July 2017 to June 2018. Patients of any age and of either gender were included. A total of 673 patients (1.97% of total admission) were referred from different departments of the hospital for psychiatric consultation within the study period. Majority of the respondents were female. The mean age of the respondents was 59.47 (±1.98) years. Among the referred, Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was the diagnosis in 24.96%, followed by Major depressive disorder (MDD) in 9.95% cases. Referral from the department of Medicine and allied was 92.86 %, followed by department of Surgery and allied (6.38%) & department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (0.74%). Frequency of referral was the lowest in the months of November to January. There is a need to encourage multi-disciplinary interaction in the management of patients who attend general hospitals, so as to better identify the psychiatric morbidity. Background: There is scant literature from developing country on gender and psychiatric disorders across consultation liaison Psychiatry Services. The aim was to assess Gender Differences in Psychiatric diagnosis, Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy and explore correlations among in patients referred for Consultation liaison Psychiatry Services. Methods: It was a cross sectional survey conducted among inpatients referred for Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Services, over 3 months. All inpatients in various wards at MGM Hospital, Navi Mumbai. Cases referred for consultation liaison psychiatry were clinically interviewed by the Consultant and given appropriate clinical diagnosis and provided standard psychiatric and psychological care are included. Data collected after consent, on predesigned proforma and analyzed using SPSS 20. Institutional Ethics clearance was obtained. Result : A total of (n=73) were referred for Consultation Liaison Psychiatry over a period of 3 months. The most frequent reason for referral for men was substance use (50%), and that for women was sadness of mood (36.4%). Medicine department contributed to maximum referrals for both men (52.5%) and women (78.8%). The most common diagnosis in men was Alcohol use disorder and in women was Mood disorder. The most common pharmacotherapy advised in men was Benzodiazepine(43%), and in women was Antidepressant(63.6%)and the most common psychotherapy advised in men was Dead diction therapy and in women was Individual counselling. Significant differences emerged in gender across reason for referral, psychiatric diagnosis, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy and stressors profile. Conclusion: Our study findings have relevant implications in the area of gender and psychiatry across consultation liaison psychiatry.
