“…Interestingly, SUDs were also the only diagnostic difference in the current report between the violent and nonviolent group, further underlining the importance of treatment if it is related to reoffending risk and other adverse outcomes, such as self-harm and suicide in custody. Of note, there is evidence that substance abuse is related to severe self-harm (Rivlin, Hawton, Marzano, & Fazel, 2010) and suicide for adults in custody (Fruehwald, Matschnig, Koenig, Bauer, & Frottier, 2004). Another disorder in the current community sample with lower estimates than those reported in Western countries was for conduct disorder.…”

“…Furthermore, the MINI Plus is typically used as a one-time assessment, which may not be sufficient to account for the rapid fluctuation of both mental health symptoms and neurobiological effects caused by substances. Complications during the assessment of mental illness and concurrent disorders using the MINI Plus in marginalized populations have been discussed in previous research, 45,60,61 and further discussion with regard to homeless individuals specifically is desirable and necessary. Despite these methodological challenges, prevalence rates for mental disorders in our population were multiple times higher than in the general female population, although they may only reflect an approximation of the true rates.…”
