Psychiatric disorders in China: strengths and challenges of contemporary research and clinical services

Abstract: China accounts for 17% of the global disease burden attributable to mental, neurological and substance use disorders. As a country undergoing profound societal change, China faces growing challenges to reduce the disease burden caused by psychiatric disorders. In this review, we aim to present an overview of progress in neuroscience research and clinical services for psychiatric disorders in China during the past three decades, analysing contributing factors and potential challenges to the field development. W… Show more

“…1 B). To further validate this observation, we also estimated the immune cell proportions in other three independent bulk blood transcriptomic datasets (i.e., ANM1, ANM2 [ 47 ], and ZIB [ 75 ]) using three alternative computational tools (i.e., quanTIseq [ 59 ], CIBERSORT [ 60 ], and MCP-counter [ 61 ]). As expected, we found a significantly higher NLR in AD than in NC in most of the datasets when using different computational tools except for ANM2 dataset under CIBERSORT (Fig.…”

“…For example, in the Zhangjiang International Brain BioBank (Shanghai) alone, neuroimaging/neurocognitive/environmental/gut microbiota data and corresponding blood samples have been collected from 7500 healthy subjects and 4400 patients with various mental disorders. 35 Lastly, it should be noted that some other countries and organisations have also launched brain projects after 2010 (table 2), such as Korea (2016), 36 the UK (2010), 37 Canada (2017), 38 Israel (2011), 39 Australia (2016) 40 and the International Brain Laboratory (2016, inte rnat iona lbra inlab. com), constituting a worldwide array of brain science.…”

“…China accounts for 17% of the global disease burden attributable to mental, neurological, and substance use disorders, constituting 10% of its national disease burden (Baxter et al, 2016). As a country undergoing profound societal change, China faces growing challenges to reduce the disease burden caused by mental disorders (Chang et al, 2021). Over the past decades, the focus of the deinstitutionalization movement has shifted from mental hospitals to community mental health centers (Bhugra et al, 2017).…”
