Abstract: Background Mitochondrial Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is a rare mitochondrial disorder which presents with mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes. Mitochondrial diabetes is the cause in 1% of all diabetic patients.
