Psoriasis and neurodegenerative diseases—a review

Abstract: Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease with underlying genetic, inflammatory and immunological background, which is a great medical problem, currently regarded as a systemic condition. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are characterized by a progressive loss of nervous tissue, which affects elderly people more frequently; therefore, it is suspected that, due to society's aging, morbidity is going to increase. We performed a thorough review in order to investigate for the first time whether psoriasis may predispose… Show more

“…The possible relationship of psoriasis and neurodegenerative disorders (NDs) has not been established yet. It is suspected that chronic inflammation and oxidative stress promote ND development in PsO patients in direct and indirect ways, but the evidence is rather weak [54]. The improper homeostasis of fatty-acid-binding proteins (FABPs), glutamic acid (GA), and neurofilament light chain (NFL) have been suggested in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease, and other NDs.…”

“…Another possible explanation for the higher prevalence of mental disorders among patients with psoriasis is the stigmatisation of the disease and sleep disturbances, which lead to increased stress and decreased quality of life [ 11 ]. Furthermore, some studies report that patients who suffer from psoriasis and do not receive systemic treatment had an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease compared to a group not taking such medications [ 12 ].…”
