Pseudotumoral hepatic tuberculosis with pericardial abscess

Abstract: We report the postmortem findings in a 28-year-old immunocompetent male patient, a rare case of tuberculous liver abscesses with concomitant pericardial abscess in the absence of pleuropulmonary or splenic involvement, who continued to be a diagnostic dilemma. This case report illustrates the difficulty in reaching the correct diagnosis in case of hepatic masses, which are most often confused with carcinoma of the liver, primary or metastatic and, hence, have been aptly referred to as pseudotumoral hepatic tub… Show more

“…Approximately 79% of all reported hepatic TB cases were due to systemic dissemination of bacilli, called miliary hepatic TB. However, several cases of local hepatic TB, which are isolated infections of the liver, have been reported in South Africa, the Philippines, and India [ 11 , 13 - 16 ]. Since hepatic TB is underreported in published literature, any regional clustering of described hepatic TB cases may reflect a reporting bias, and the distribution of hepatic TB likely mirrors the global epidemiology of active pulmonary TB cases.…”

“…1 The healing of the primary focus leaves no traces when the liver is involved. 6 Tuberculoma could result from agglutination of several hepatic granulomas. 7 Clinical signs of the pseudo-tumoral form of liver tuberculosis are non-specific and often misleading.…”
