Pseudomyxoma Peritonei Syndrome of Appendiceal Origin: An Overview

Abstract: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) syndrome is an uncommon, slowly progressive condition that usually arises from perforation of an adenoma in the appendix. PMP syndrome is characterized by mucin accumulation in the peritoneal cavity. Mucinous implants are found on all peritoneal surfaces and the omentum. PMP syndrome rarely metastasizes outside the abdominal cavity but remains a fatal illness as the space in the abdomen and pelvis required for normal function of the gastrointestinal tract becomes filled with copiou… Show more

“…Three types of PMP, namely PMP ascites type, nodular type and mixed type (511) have been reported in the literature. It appears that these three types are part of a continuous process; the nodular type occurs late in the process and evolves from PMP ascites.…”

“…10 Mucinous tumors of appendiceal origin are relatively rare; approximately 300 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States. 11 Although these tumors are not considered as biologically aggressive, like PC associated with gastrointestinal adenocarcinomas, appendiceal tumors can nevertheless be fatal. Peritoneal carcinomatosis originating from the appendix is called PMP.…”

“…Symptoms may be insidious, such as an increase in abdominal girth, early satiety, enlarging hernia (in males), and ovarian mass (in females), or acute such as pelvic pain, nausea, vomiting, and changes in bowel or bladder habits. 11,12 Ovarian cancer arises from the epithelial surface of the ovary; it is the most common cause of cancer-related death from gynecologic tumors in the United States. 3 About 75% are initially diagnosed when they have progressed to stage II to IV tumors.…”

“…Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare disease with the incidence of 1-2 cases per million per year [ 1,2]. It is slowly progressive condition that usually arises from perforation of appendix due to an enlarging appendiceal adenoma or carcinoma, allowing mucin producing neoplastic cells to gain access to peritoneal cavity.…”
