Pseudomonas Keratitis Associated With Daily Wear of Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses

Abstract: Increased oxygen permeability associated with silicone hydrogel contact lenses may reduce, but does not eliminate, the risk of pseudomonas keratitis. Studies have yet to quantify the risk of keratitis associated with daily wear of these lens materials. Further study is necessary to identify the risks of complications with daily wear of silicone hydrogel lenses and to determine which factors may contribute to those risks.

“…There are still reports of complications with the regular use of contact lenses [3][4][5], which range from mild to severe and occur with all lens modalities. The most common complications include giant papillary conjunctivitis, corneal abrasion, edema or ulcer, microbial keratitis, neovascularization, and peripheral infiltrates [2,5].…”

“…26 Many investigations about CL-related microbial keratitis have been reported. [27][28][29] However, based on the lack of microbial keratitis in this postmarket surveillance study and the low rate of other complications, we conclude that the CW of the Menicon Z hyper-Dk/t RGP lens provides a safe, full-time vision correction alternative for patients who can adapt to RGP lens wear.…”
