Pseudomonas entomophila: A Versatile Bacterium with Entomopathogenic Properties

Abstract: Pseudomonas entomophila is unique among Pseudomonas species in being able to activate a systemic immune response in both Drosophila larvae and adults. It has been subsequently shown that oral infections with high doses of this bacterium are highly pathogenic to Drosophila and cause massive destruction of the Drosophila gut epithelium. Besides Drosophila, P. entomophila was able to kill other insects from at least three different orders, suggesting that it has a potentially wide host range and making it a promi… Show more

“…The insecticidal properties of nonspore-forming bacteria to insects often vary upon their capability to enter, persist, and survive in the gut physicochemical conditions and be protected from the gut immune defense system as well. Thus, the excretion of toxic substances may disrupt the host's physiology (Dieppois et al, 2015). Obtained results indicate that the strains B. weihenstephanensis and Pseudomonas sp.…”

“…showed significant efficacy in controlling locust nymphs. Moreover, they displayed specific characteristic features of sepsis that appeared in thinning out of the internals and body skeletal, often with a specific rancid smell (Dieppois et al, 2015). The mortality rate of L. migratoria infected with Pseudomonas sp.…”

“…157 However, the animal model species Caenorhabditis elegans, recognizes P. aeruginosa pyochelin (42) through chemosensory detection by GPCRs (G protein-coupled receptors) resulting in pathogen avoidance and host survival. 158 Noteworthy, many plant pathogens, 123 and insect pathogens 159,160 rely on the production of siderophores to cause full disease in their hosts. In agreement with their ability to modulate behaviour in C. elegans, siderophores not only act as virulence factors, they can also be perceived by the host triggering a variety of responses in an iron-dependent and -independent manner.…”
