Pseudomonas aeruginosa septic trapezo-metacarpal arthritis after prostate laser vaporization

Abstract: Prostatic laser vaporization resection is a new and fast growing technique. Most publications compare this technique to the standard diathermic snare prostate resection without considering its particular complications. Septic arthritis of the trapezio-metacarpal joint is particularly rare if it has a haematogenous origin. We present here the case of a 65-year-old man with an isolated trapezio-metacarpal Pseudomonas aeruginosa arthritis with a haematogenous origin following a laser vaporization prostate resecti… Show more

“…Septic arthritis of the hip joint does not necessarily present with an alarming clinical picture; in many cases the only complaint is pain and restriction of movement. Similarly, prostatic infections which are frequent in elderly susceptible groups also have variable presentation [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] . Therefore, diagnosis can be delayed allowing for the haematogenous spreading of the infection, the development of septic arthritis and the subsequent destruction of the affected joint [2][3][4][5][6][7][8] .…”

“…Among the non-fermenting gram-negative bacilli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been implicated as a cause of septic arthritis after invasive procedures, for example, after prostate resection [38], and urologic surgery [39], and as a cause of septic arthritis of the knee after anterior cruciate ligament surgery [40] and intra-articular injection of the knee [41]. Burkholderia cepacia [42] and Acinetobacter baumannii [43] have also been implicated as causative pathogens, especially following procedures.…”
